ABC is committed to advancing science-based solutions that strengthen honey bee health, protect market integrity, and enhance the long-term sustainability of Alberta’s beekeeping industry. We strategically invest in research and innovation that delivers measurable value to beekeepers and positions Alberta as a global leader in high-quality honey production.

Our research and project priorities focus on two core pillars:

Honey Bee Health & Resilience

  • Improving Honey Bee Stock Quality
    • We are strengthening colony performance by focusing on the development of locally adapted bee stock and improving key colony-level traits such as wintering ability, disease resistance, productivity, and overall resilience. By supporting breeding and evaluation programs, we aim to enhance long-term genetic sustainability and reduce reliance on imported stock.
  • Enhancing Honey Bee Nutrition
    • Optimal nutrition is foundational to colony health. Our research supports:
      • Development and evaluation of improved nutritional supplements.
      • Championing the consideration of nutritional value of pollen and nectar sources within crop breeding and forage strategies .
  • Tropilaelaps Preparedness & Prevention
    • With the global spread of Tropilaelaps mites posing a significant emerging threat, ABC is proactively investing in surveillance, preparedness planning, and response strategies. Our goal is to equip Alberta beekeepers with the tools, protocols, and knowledge needed to prevent introduction and respond rapidly should this pest be detected.

Honey Market Position & Profile

  • Development of a New Standard for Honey
    • To reinforce Alberta’s reputation for premium honey, ABC is supporting the development of an updated, science-based honey standard. This work strengthens product consistency, transparency, and market differentiation both domestically and internationally.
  • Ensuring Authenticity of Imported Honey
    • Protecting consumer confidence and fair market conditions is critical. ABC supports initiatives that verify the authenticity of all imported honeys through enhanced testing, traceability, and regulatory collaboration.
  • Development of MRLs for Quinclorac and Glyphosate
    • ABC is advancing work toward establishing Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Quinclorac and Glyphosate. Science-based MRL development supports regulatory clarity, protects export access, and ensures continued consumer trust in Alberta honey.

Tech Transfer & Industry Collaboration

ABC’s Tech Transfer Program (TTP) bridges research and real-world application by delivering practical tools and services directly to beekeepers. Through diagnostics, hive monitoring and sampling, education, and training, the TTP supports informed decision-making and continuous improvement in beekeeping practices.

Working collaboratively with beekeepers, researchers, provincial apiculturists, government, academia, and industry stakeholders, ABC advances integrated hive management strategies that:

  • Improve bee health and resilience
  • Manage diseases and pests
  • Strengthen nutrition and management practices
  • Reduce operating risks and costs

Through targeted research investment and strong partnerships, ABC is ensuring Alberta’s honey bees, and the industry they sustain, remain healthy, resilient, and globally competitive.
