 About the Alberta Beekeepers Commission

The Alberta Beekeepers Commission (ABC) is a producer-led and funded organization formed under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act.  The Commission is dedicated to advancing the sustainability, profitability and long-term viability of Alberta’s beekeeping industry.  ABC works collaboratively with producers, government, research and industry partners (provincially and nationally) to support honeybee health, promote best practices for beekeeping, and strengthening the industry through research, advocacy, policy and effective programs.

Executive Director Opportunity

The Alberta Beekeepers Commission is seeking a collaborative, results-oriented leader who is committed to advancing Alberta’s commercial beekeeping, pollination and honey industries.  As the Executive Director (ED), you will provide strategic leadership and guidance to the organization to achieve the Commission’s vision – A vibrant, healthy, and growing Alberta beekeeping and honey industry.  The ED leads the effective management and implementation of ABC’s strategic plan, programs, and services while ensuring alignment with ABC’s values, mission, regulations, policies, and procedures.

 Role Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will:

  • Provide leadership and direction in planning, developing, implementing and managing the operations of ABC;
  • Oversee financial management, operational excellence, and risk mitigation strategies;
  • Lead and develop the staff team to ensure organizational alignment, professional development and succession planning;
  • Lead and implement government and stakeholder advocacy initiatives to support the long-term viability of Alberta’s beekeeping and honey industry;
  • Represent ABC in industry, and government forums to enhance the visibility of the Commission and Alberta’s beekeeping and honey industry; and
  • Foster a team culture rooted in ethics, integrity, transparency and accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Board Relations and Support

  • Lead the implementation of the Commission’s Strategic Plan and annual operational plan
  • Provide clear, timely and accurate information and options for the Board’s decision-making
  • Support effective governance practices and maintain an effective relationship between the Board and management

Financial Management

  • Manage financial planning, budgeting, reporting and controls in accordance with approved policies and legislation
  • Oversee contracts, research projects and service providers to ensure value and results

People and Culture

  • Lead, mentor and develop staff by fostering a collaborative, accountable and high-performing work environment
  • Model strong self-awareness, ethical leadership, and commitment to professional development
  • Promote a culture of respect, trust, continuous learning, systems thinking and teamwork

Operations and Reporting

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Commission, ensuring organizational effectiveness and operational excellence
  • Provide timely KPI reporting to the board of directors on the strategic priorities and goals outlined in the Commission’s Strategic Plan

Program Planning and Delivery

  • Oversee the development, delivery and evaluation of programs that support bee health, research, and industry sustainability
  • Forster partnerships that enhance research, innovation, and knowledge transfer
  • Support continuous improvement and creative problem solving to address emerging challenges and crisis impacting the industry

Government, Industry and Stakeholder Relations and Advocacy

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with producers, government officials and staff, researchers, funding organizations, industry partners and other stakeholders
  • Represent the Commission as a credible and trusted voice for Alberta’s beekeeping industry
  • Advance the Commission’s priorities through effective advocacy and collaboration

Required Education and Experience:

  • University degree in agriculture, business, science, or related field and/or combination of education and experience.
  • A background of progressively senior responsibilities including 4+ years working as a senior leader/executive director.
  • Experience reporting to a board of directors and understanding of effective governance principles.
  • Skilled in basic computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Direct experience in developing and implementing stakeholder and government relations strategies.
  • Direct experience in successfully leading and developing a staff team.
  • Understanding and awareness of agricultural sector

Additional Knowledge and Skills (Preferred):

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s beekeeping and honey industry
  • Familiarity of the policy and regulatory environment under which ABC is governed
  • Experience working with producers
  • Experience in developing and implementing applied science programs

Compensation:

Alberta Beekeepers Commission provides a competitive compensation package for the Executive Director role.
