ABC Honey Quality & Authenticity Project

  • Total Project Value: $100,000
  • Project Lead: Alberta Beekeepers Commission
  • Project Funders: Funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative (SCAP), ABC.
  • ABC Contribution: For every $1 ABC invests, it is matched by an additional $1.50 in external funding.

The Alberta Beekeepers Commission (ABC) has been working on a new initiative to develop a recognized quality and authenticity standard for pure Canadian honey. This project is being developed in Alberta first, with the goal of creating a model that can be scalable and applicable across Canada.

This initiative will help lay the foundation for a system that strengthens Alberta honey’s reputation, reinforces trust in Canadian honey worldwide, and represents an important step in addressing cheap imported honey that undermines locally produced, premium, pure Canadian honey.

WHAT THE PROJECT WILL DO:

  • Draft a Beekeeping & Honey Production Code of Practice, reflecting existing best production practices, regulations, and standards.
  • Produce a roadmap for future implementation and communication of the new quality system.

HOW WE ARE ENAGING PRODUCERS:

Work is already underway, and producer and industry input is essential. In the coming weeks, we will be inviting feedback to help ensure the system is practical, valuable, and workable for commercial beekeeping operations. By developing this framework in Alberta first, the project aims to establish a credible foundation that could support a broader Canadian approach to honey quality and authenticity in the future.
